Cities such as the dwarven town Ironforge and Wow gold classic orc town Orgrimmar were overrun in hours. Non-playable personalities, who couldn't die as a result of particular coding, could also capture the consequence, meaning any participant who passed by them may receive Corrupted Blood.
After word got out, players hunted frantically for news about what was going on.
"The entire world chat would burst any time a city fell," says Nadia Heller, an ex-World of Warcraft player whose character lived through the episode. "We kept a close attention not only on our guild chat but on world chat too to determine where not to go. We didn't need to grab it."
The spread of Corrupted Blood, and also the participant's behavioral changes to this, caught the attention of epidemiologist Dr. Nina Fefferman, who was a World of Warcraft player at the time of this incident. Dr. Dmitri Williams, an associate professor from USC who was also playing World of Warcraft through the Corrupted Blood episode, queries if Fefferman's findings are valid mirrors to real-life behaviour.
"There are matches where you are invited to behave in a way that you would never behave offline," Williams said. "You really have to know [the sport ], play it and understand the culture so you can create these kind of determinations that, yeah, this is a fairly good proxy."
Despite this, Fefferman believes that virtual worlds like World of Warcraft are ideal testing environments for bulk behavioral responses to outbreaks. "It is not just that individuals were role-playing. People were being themselves," Fefferman said.
