Fallout 76 steel farming gets faster by scrapping super mutant guns with Scrapper and running West Tek or Uranium Fever. Buy bulk only as backup.
so I burned through way too much 5.56 last night and got reminded that Steel is still the real ammo tax in Fallout 76. I know some people just buy junk or ammo when they're feeling lazy, and I've grabbed quick stuff from U4GM before when I wanted game currency/items without server hopping, but for Steel specifically, farming it yourself is still stupidly easy. My take: if you're not scrapping enemy weapons with Scrapper on, you're making the grind way worse than it needs to be.
What I've been running
West Tek is still my go-to in the current 2024 game state. I tested a few loops this week, and nothing beat just clearing Super Mutants, grabbing every ugly Assault Rifle, Laser Rifle, Board, whatever, then scrapping it all at a bench. With Scrapper under Intelligence, the numbers jump hard. Some rifles were giving me 20-ish Steel depending on mods, maybe a bit more sometimes. Could be off by a few, but it felt way better than chasing loose cans around the map.
Uranium Fever still slaps
If West Tek gets boring, Uranium Fever at Blackwater Mine is the other comfy pick. Mole Miners drop Shotguns and Miner Gauntlets like they're trying to fund your whole ammo stash. In my runs, one decent event usually covered enough Steel for a good chunk of.45 or 5.56 crafting after Super Duper did its thing. People keep acting like events are only for notes and legendaries, but the trash weapons are the real prize here. Don't leave them on the floor. That's free ammo.
The stuff I don't bother with much
Grafton Steel Yard is fine if you want passive Steel from the extractors, but defending workshops is kinda mid unless you're already chilling there. Bulk Steel from vendors is okay too, since it's 30 Steel per bundle and usually around 25 to 40 caps depending on perks and Charisma. But if I'm broke, I'd rather do one West Tek lap than pay NPC prices. Can Chimes are cute though. Pleasant Valley and the Penitentiary traps giving 9 Tin Cans, so 18 Steel, is honestly better than it sounds.
Don't fall for the ore trap unless you're ready
I saw someone say mining Iron Ore with Excavator is the best Steel farm, and idk, maybe if you've got Acid stacked. The 2 ore plus 1 acid into 5 Steel recipe works, and Excavator helps a ton. But if you don't already farm Snallygasters or Floaters, you're just moving the grind sideways. Also, loose junk respawns can be annoying because of that 255 item pickup thing, afaik. Enemy drops don't have that same pain, which is why weapons win.
Small caps tip if you're desperate
If I'm completely out of materials and don't feel like doing a full route, I'll sometimes stock up on Fallout 76 Bottle Caps and just clean out vendors for Bulk Steel while watching for cheap player vendor junk. Not my main method, but it works when Daily Ops or Expeditions ate all your ammo. Trust me though, West Tek plus Scrapper plus Super Duper is still the busted combo here. Hope this helps, lmk if I missed anything.
