RuneScape's PvP feature, which is known as"the Duel Arena, will also be subject to stricter rules. Jagex declares that the feature "has been a flashpoint for this destructive behavior", and that 38 per cent of the bans for RWT action up to this point result from that part that the player plays. The company claims that this equates in "thousands of bans every month".
In the end, the developer appears to be considering the nuclear alternative, saying "we're contemplating in the near future to remove this Duel Arena out of RuneScape entirely." In the meantime the game will take "some short-term steps" to manage PvP "until our development teams are able to deliver an important update that completely takes over the Duel Arena next year."
This will come with a limit to the total amount GP or gold points and players will be able to stake games at the Duel Arena. Players can place bets "no less than 50m GP for each duel". The additional measures have not been defined yet.
Jagex declares that "a completely new experience that's going to play out as part the Elder God Wars storyline" will replace Duel Arena at the beginning of 2022 No further details have been provided yet.
While the impact of these changes remains to be assessed however, they seem to be among the most powerful measures any studio has taken to stop external abuse of its systems for real-world profit. If successful, similar approaches could be seen across the MMO area in the near future.
Jagex is announcing that after 18 years as the PvP battlefield, Duel Arena will be leaving RuneScape and a new area can be created. RuneScape will launch Het's Oasis which will feature a completely new terrain, new skills and two mini-quests you can try.
Beginning today, with the Oasis Restoration the players will be charged with the transformation of the Duel Arena following a cataclysmic earthquake that destroyed the arena.
