Best way to cross the river in Kyiv?

Hi. I'm arriving in Kyiv tomorrow for the first time and need to move between the central station and the eastern part of the city. Traffic looks heavy during rush hours. Is the local subway system easy to navigate for foreigners, or should I just use taxis?
