A few hours of farming may take up to three months. It's not as if they're never farmed either, you will still face a lot of competition from AH sellers on these items and more likely than not you'll get tired of them and put them down to 25% of their normal cost.

Gold that is Retail can be traded for Classic however, so long as it's not in conflict with ToS.
It's assumed that the person is actually farming for gold. It is possible that they're doing this in order to gain a token in order to keep playing for free. Yes, they're more efficient ways of earning money , but what's the point?
WoW is 15 years old and has a lot of content and is still an active community. I would suggest you give it your best shot, enjoy the time and effort that went into the game and form your own decision. It's all about the experience you're experiencing, not the opinions of those around you. I was amazed by the amount of buy WOW TBC Classic Gold legion that I found.
