Modern Warfare 4 Beta: What Players Should Know | U4GM

August 21 is the date most Call of Duty players need on the calendar, because Modern Warfare 4's first beta window is meant to start right after CoD Next wraps up. It's the pre-order phase, running through August 25, and it covers PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If you've got a code from a creator drop or giveaway, you're in too. Plenty of players will use CoD MW4 Bot Lobbies beforehand, not to show off, but to get their aim back before public matches turn into a sweat-fest.

Two Weekends, Different Crowds

The first weekend will probably feel a bit more focused. Pre-order players usually jump straight into weapon testing, movement drills, and early map routes. That's where the odd bugs show up as well. Doors that don't behave, spawns that feel rough, one attachment that clearly does too much. It's beta week. Nobody should expect a finished product, but that's also why it matters.

The second weekend begins August 28 and ends September 1. This one is open to everybody, no code needed. Nintendo Switch is also expected to join the test, which is a big deal considering how rarely Call of Duty beta access reaches that platform. Cross-platform performance will get watched closely. Frame rate, visual clarity, input response, all of it. Players won't be gentle if something feels off.

What Players Will Actually Test

The Meta: Everyone will chase fast SMGs and low-recoil assault rifles.

The Snag: Close-range builds often crumble once Ground War opens up.

The Fix: Learn two loadouts before copying anyone's stream setup.

Reality check: The strongest beta gun usually gets nerfed, so don't build your whole launch plan around it.

Modes Worth Your Time

Infinity Ward says the beta will include up to 19 weapons, plus a decent mix of modes. There's 3v3 Skirmish for quick scraps, Ground War for vehicle-heavy chaos, and a movement course for anyone who wants to stop sliding into walls. Search and Destroy is the headline for competitive players. It's not often included this early, so map timing and bomb-site balance should get plenty of attention.

Beta phase Dates Access Main focus
Weekend one August 21 to 25 Pre-order or beta code Early weapon and map testing
Weekend two August 28 to September 1 Open to all players Cross-platform stress testing

Kill Block is another mode people will be watching, mostly because it's new and nobody quite knows where it'll sit between casual fun and serious competition. Some fans were hoping for a separate alpha, like the old Gunfight Alpha. That doesn't appear to be happening. For now, Kill Block looks set to make its first real impression during the full beta.

The DMZ Question

A lot of guys are wondering whether DMZ will get its own test before the October 23 release.

Maybe, but nothing's confirmed. Right now, assume multiplayer is the only guaranteed beta content.

Make the Beta Count

Don't treat these weekends like a normal demo. Use them to learn the awkward bits early: where players head after spawning, which lanes punish slow rotations, and whether your favourite gun still works once a lobby gets serious. Watch CoD Next on August 21 if you can, because creator footage will reveal plenty before you even download the client. Then play a few modes outside your comfort zone. Search and Destroy teaches patience. Ground War exposes weak range setups. Skirmish shows whether your movement is actually clean or just flashy. If you're looking for a relaxed way to practise, a cheap MW4 Bot Lobby can help you test routes and attachments without every match becoming a grudge match.
