Are you a big fan of Square Enix's HD-2D gaming?

In a new interview on 4Gamer (translated by Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano discussed the graphic style, and the way it's being implemented in D2R Ladder Items future games by the company. The interviewer was shocked that more indie games haven't been able to replicate the style, Asano revealed the reason the reason is because it's expensive!

"It's likely to be worth noting that it costs more than you'd expect. It's the perfect match for the titles want from Square Enix. It's possible that there's nothing to gain from the other companies that are copying it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately this cost won't stop Square Enix from releasing more games that are similar to this.

One of the remakes for Live a Live is set to release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, and a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently working on. There are many other games that could benefit from the style and it will be interesting to discover how Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company is clearly invested in this graphic style, Asano went on to explain that there's no currently a "definitive text," and it will remain evolving according to the game.

"We haven't put together something like the one we have. The way in which it's written differs in each movie, which means that the HD-2D experience will be different each time. With Live A Live for example the mood in the prehistoric portion will be different to the sci-fi scenario.

The variety of our expressions has expanded thanks to the latest ideas we've devised. "While the price may be prohibitive for some developers, HD-2D clearly worked as a selling point for many gamers. I hope we'll watch Square Enix find new ways to further develop the style and create more games to be released!
